ECCP Luncheon Meeting with DENR
The Philippines is among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that recurring damage from typhoons accounts for 0.2–0.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) annually, a figure that could rise significantly without stronger measures to enhance climate resilience.
Alongside climate risks, the country faces persistent environmental challenges, particularly in solid waste management. According to the 2025 World Bank What a Waste Global Database, the Philippines generates approximately 14.6 million tons of municipal solid waste each year, ranking 27th out of 50 countries included in the database, which covers nearly all countries and 330 major cities worldwide. The link between solid waste and flooding is evident, as clogged waterways exacerbate flood risks during heavy rainfall. Addressing these challenges presents an opportunity to strengthen flood control and waste management systems, enhance governance, and implement long-term, sustainable solutions.
As the ASEAN Chair, the Philippines is well-positioned to guide the region toward sustainable development by advancing ambitious climate targets and enhancing self-reliance in climate financing while maintaining its appeal as an investment destination. In 2022, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act was enacted, amending the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. This landmark legislation marked a significant step in tackling plastic pollution by holding companies accountable for the recovery, treatment, and recycling of their product packaging. Ensuring effective and consistent implementation, however, remains a key challenge.
In this context, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) is organizing a Luncheon Meeting with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to:
- Discuss strategies to advance plastic waste reduction and strengthen the implementation of the EPR Act;
- Explore opportunities for ECCP members to support sustainable initiatives in green infrastructure, renewable energy, and waste management; and
- Identify priority areas for public-private collaboration to promote a sustainable, circular, and environmentally resilient economy in the Philippines.
The meeting will also provide an opportunity for the DENR to share its key policy directions, ongoing programs, and priority projects, as well as outline areas where private sector expertise, innovation, and investment can support and scale up national sustainability efforts.
